Oour goal is to crop the picture shown to the right so the viewer can see more details of the cannon.  We'd also like to eliminate the road and as much of the surrounding clutter as possible. 

Most if not all digital cameras come packaged with software that will allow you to tweak photos to your need. The cropping procedure is fairly simple and the benefits show up immediately as witnessed by the results seen below.

Notice how much different the photo looks in comparison to the original.  We've created a photo that has maintained the focal point of the cannon, loads much faster and visually is more  appealing.  Cropping is also helpful if you print your own photos.

Compressing the photo to lessen the file size is accomplished by reducing the number of colors in the photo.  This photo has been reduced 20% producing a fair sized web picture that's less then 50 KB and will load in about 10 seconds.
