The
digital revolution has taken the
country by storm. Digital cameras allow you to see what you've
taken instantly. Better yet, since there's no film, take as
many photos as you want and discard the mistakes later. Is
there any wonder the film industry is losing ground after 100 years
of domination.
Consider the photo
shown below. This was taken with a 3 megapixel camera that
produces photos 2048 X 1536 pixels. Hmmmm what does that mean?
Well the quality is good enough to support large prints.
However it won't show comfortably on most computer screens set to a
typical screen resolution of 800 to 1020 pixels in width. The
good news is software programs typically reduce photos to the
viewers screen size. Therefore most users have no idea how big
the file size actually is.
With
graphic software the picture has been shrunk to 1/10 its former
size. Run your mouse over the photo to see the dimensions. The
advantage of being able to reduce an image is twofold. Not
only does it take up less space on the page, more importantly when
part of an E-mail it will download many times faster.
The original would
take over 4 minutes to download on a dial up connection. This
photo will load in just over 9 seconds! Okay the picture is a
little small but it may be all that's needed, especially if speed is
of the essence.
Lets suppose you just
want to show a close up of the cannon, what then? For more
